African Women Pivotal in Shaping the Future of Technology – Thabisile Phumo

Thabisile Phumo, the Executive Vice President for Stakeholder Relations at Sibanye-Stillwater in South Africa, has underscored the pivotal role of African women in driving technological and scientific progress. Speaking at the 2024 edition of the Females in Tech (FEMITECH) Conference, Phumo emphasised the imperative of inclusivity and global accessibility in technological advancements.

Addressing the topic “Women Supporting Women: Uniting Across Differences,” Phumo urged women to actively engage in the dynamic realms of technology and science. She highlighted the enduring presence of science throughout history and advocated for the inclusion of African women in the journey towards progress, citing their vast potential and intelligence.

Phumo articulated a vision where technological advancements transcend mere gadgetry or software development, emphasising the importance of accessibility and unity. “It’s not just about the gadgets we create or the software we develop; it’s about ensuring that these advancements are accessible to everyone, that they serve to unite us rather than divide,” she affirmed.

Furthermore, Phumo shared insights into her leadership and advocacy efforts, which champion inclusivity, empowerment, and the integration of diverse perspectives in Africa’s technological and scientific landscape. She positioned herself as a beacon of progress, driving holistic development amidst South Africa’s innovation and vibrant culture.

FEMITECH, an annual event commemorating International Women’s Day, organised by the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT. FEMITECH serves as a platform to celebrate women’s achievements in technology and highlight opportunities in ICT. The conference convened diverse voices from academia, industry, and beyond to address pressing issues of gender equality and equity in the technology sector.

Notably, at the event, three women were honored for their contributions to promoting technology and inspiring inclusion: Hon. Ama Pomaa Boateng, MP for JUABEN Constituency, Ashanti Region; Madam Esther Akua Gyamfi, Executive Secretary of the National Council on Persons with Disabilities (NCPD); and Thabisile Phumo, Executive Vice President for Stakeholder Relations at Sibanye-Stillwater, South Africa.

The event featured distinguished speakers and panelists, including Prof Elsie Kauffman, Ing.
