GI-KACE Partners with Berekum College of Education to Enhance Digital Training

The Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (GI-KACE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Berekum College of Education to help boost the ICT capacity of the trainee teachers of the college.

The purpose of the MoU is to formalize a strategic move to enhance the college’s training of basic education teachers in IT.

Mr. Stephen Baffoe, Director for Finance and Administration at GI-KACE, during the signing of the MoU at the Centre’s Sunyani office, indicated that the relationship that GI-KACE is developing with Berekum College of Education is an opportunity for GI-KACE to assist the college in bringing to bare the quality digital training that GI-KACE is known for.

The MoU signifies a step towards leveraging technology to enhance educational practices and empower educators with essential ICT skills for effective teaching and learning delivery.

According to him, the partnership aims to leverage GI-KACE’s expertise in digital training to assist Berekum College of Education in equipping its teacher trainees with advanced ICT skills.

“For a college that trains teachers in ICT for basic education, this training will not only make them competent users of ICT but also good ICT teachers. To be more effective users and teachers of ICT, the trained would certainly need more than what their curriculum prescribes,” Mr Baffoe stated.

He added that the college itself thought that for them to be effective in the use of ICT tools, they would need something more than what the syllabus provides for them and that is why they reached out to GI-KACE to have this collaboration. GI-KACE will be emphasizing hands-on practical training in their endeavor.

Mr Baffoe was optimistic that, the success of the MoU has the potential of making GI-KACE services available to other colleges of education. This is another way by which GI-KACE as the ICT capacity development agency of the Ministry of Communication and Digitalisation (MoCD) can reach out to a larger clientele base.

“This will get far because now we can reach out and touch a lot of people. The students that we are going to train there are people who after receiving the training, will also train the students in the classroom, providing us the opportunity to offer a certain level of quality of training in ICT to basic school teachers,” he emphasized.

Mr. Sylvester Donkoh, the College Principal for Berekum College of Education, disclosed that the partnership aims not only to benefit students but also to extend its advantages to other staff.

According to him, the ICT training is aimed at giving the students of Berekum College of Education an enhanced level of education, so that wherever they find themselves, they will be able to do their work using ICT tools to research. This will in turn elevate their performance as teachers and members of the college, including those whose specialization is not in ICT.

Other personalities present at the signing of the MoU included Anita Danso, Centre Manager for GI-KACE Sunyani, Justice O.D. Fenteng, Vice Principal for Berekum College of Education among others.
